Sometimes runtime errors indicate that there is a problem in the program but several runtime error codes can be dealt with on the user’s end. Depending on the code, there are different techniques to resolve the errors.

Runtime errors occur when a program you are using encounters programming issues – depending on the application that you’re running, the fix will vary. Here are some suggestions to deal with common runtime errors that occur on Windows Vista and XP.

The most common cause of runtime errors is a conflict between a program you are running and a TSR – a Terminate and Stay Resident, which is a DOS system program that remains in the computer’s memory at all times. TSRs often include applications such as calendars and calculators or notepad functions that are available all the time. In such a case, a TSR on the computer is conflicting with another program, resulting in a runtime error.

You can temporarily remove TSRs to work around runtime errors this way:

  • Simultaneously press CTRL, ALT and DEL while clicking the Task Manager button
  • This will open the Task Manager window – XP installations might do this automatically
  • Choose the Applications tab, then click to select the program you want to disable
  • Click End Task

Runtime errors that involve ActiveX components can’t create object usually mean that there is an application error in a Microsoft Office program on an XP operating system. Rather than the program itself, it’s possible that the issue is related to an add-on associated with it. Check that you have all the latest patches for your applications or, if the problem persists, remove the add-ons one at a time to determine where the issue is. If this doesn’t work to resolve the error, try re-registering the program – or uninstall and reinstall it.

Sometimes runtime errors that indicate a Visual C++ runtime error has occurred in Iexplore.exe can be resolved by resetting your Internet Explorer settings. Before performing this operation you should know that doing so will return the IE program to its factory settings and remove any add-ons or other IE custom settings you may have added so they will need to be reinstalled after.

  • Close and quit any open programs, including Internet Explorer
    • For XP: click the Start button, then choose Run. In the Open dialog box type inetcpl.cpl then click Enter
    • For Vista: Click the Start button. In the Start Search dialog box type inetcpl.cpl then click Enter
  • This will open the Internet Options window – choose the Advanced tab
  • Choose the Reset Internet Explorer settings tab, then click Reset, then Reset again
  • Allow the process to run and reset the settings. When complete click Close
  • Restart Internet Explorer

If you are receiving runtime errors from your operating system, you can remove it and reinstall. If other fixes don’t work to resolve your problem, there might be a patch or update available at the manufacturer’s website for the issue. Download and initiate all the most recent releases for the best chances of success.
