Error Troubleshooting tips if you'd like to Do-it-yourself
Windows error messages can interrupt you when you least expect it. Here
are some tips to troubleshoot some of the most common Windows error
messages.
One of the most common reasons for Windows to experience problems and
show error messages is related to the registry. Your computer registry
is like a database of all the operations you run and over time bits and
pieces of old programs and files can accumulate on your registry,
creating clutter and making problems. If you get an error message when
you try to boot up Windows, there are a couple of tools built into your
operating system that you can use to recover your computer. If you are
running Vista, you can start with these steps to back up and restore
your registry.
-
Click the Start button, then type systempropertiesprotection
in the search bar, and then Enter
-
Enter your administrative password or click Enter if asked
-
Windows will search for disks – wait while it processes
-
In the System Properties popup box choose the System Protection tab
and then choose Create
-
Enter a name to call your restore point that you can remember, then
Create
-
Wait for Windows to make the point, then click OK, and OK again
If you’re running XP, follow these steps:
-
Click the Start button, then Run, then type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
then click OK
-
This will open the Welcome to Restore page, choose Click a Restore
Point, then Next
-
Now, on the Create a Restore Point page, type a name for the restore
point that you are setting, then choose Create
-
Wait while Windows sets a point, then click Close
Now that you have created a Restore Point you can manually restore the
computer’s registry. On Vista use these directions:
-
Click the Start button, then type systempropertiesprotection
in the search bar then press Enter
-
Type in your administrative password or press Enter if asked
-
When the System Properties popup opens, click the System Protection
tab, then choose System Restore
-
In the next dialog box click Choose a Different Restore Point and
then Next
-
Choose a restore point that predates the problems that you are
having then Next
-
Click to confirm then click Finish and allow the restore point to
set and the computer will reboot
-
Log back on then click OK on the confirmation window
On Windows XP follow these steps:
-
Click Start, then Run, then type %SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\Rstrui.exe
then OK
-
On the Welcome to System Restore window, choose Restore My Computer
to an Earlier Time, then click Next
-
Choose System Checkpoint, then click the entry called Guided Help,
then Next. Follow the prompts to choose a restore date, then OK
-
On the Confirm Restore Point Selection, choose Next – let the
process run and the computer will reboot
-
Log back on, then click OK on the confirmation page
A great utility to use to cleanup and optimize your computer is the
Windows Startup Repair tool for Vista. Using your Vista installation
disk, complete these steps.
-
Put the disk in the optical drive then reboot the computer
-
You might need to change the boot sequence to start from the CD
– see you computer user manual for instructions to do this
-
Choose your language, then Next
-
Choose Repair Your Computer
-
A System Recovery Options box will open, choose your Vista operating
system, then click Next
-
Now, on the System Recovery Options screen, choose Startup Repair to
launch the tool
Allow the process to complete, then click Finish
