Windows taskbar errors include icons that are missing in the taskbar, open programs not showing in the taskbar, icons appearing and disappearing at random or the entire taskbar including the Start button might be missing. Be sure to keep all of your antivirus programs up-to-date and run them regularly – malware can often cause these kinds of issues as well.

Auto Hide

If the auto-hide is selected for the taskbar, it will disappear from your computer, making it difficult to navigate. Check this by following these steps:

  1. Press Ctrl + Esc.
  2. If you see the Start menu, right click on it and choose Properties.
  3. Choose Taskbar.
  4. Make sure there is no auto-hide option selected. If it is, clear the checkmark and click OK to exit.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender can help you localize and fix any programs that may be causing loading problems.

  1. Go to the Microsoft website and download Windows Defender if you don’t already have it on your machine.
  2. In All Programs, find Windows Defender after it has been installed.
  3. Choose Tools and then Software Explorer.
  4. From the Category list, choose Startup Programs.
  5. Choose a support program in the Name column and click Disable.
  6. Restart the machine and see if the problem is solved.
  7. If you are still getting taskbar errors, repeat the above steps until you find the program that is causing the problem.
  8. Once you find the program in question, uninstall and reinstall it – that should eliminate taskbar errors.

Log In as Different User

If you can’t easily fix the problem under your username, you can try logging in as Administrator, create a new user for yourself and then copy the old program settings from the old account to the new one.

  1. Get into Safe Mode and choose Administrator. Type in the Administrator password (if you don’t have one, leave it blank).
  2. Choose Start and then right click on My Computer.
  3. Choose Manage.
  4. You will see Computer Management (Local) list.
  5. Expand Local Users and Groups. Right click on Users and choose New User.
  6. Choose a New User name and Password. Click Create.
  7. To copy the settings, log off and press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice.
  8. You will see the “Log onto Windows” box. Type in Administrator and the password.
  9. Right click on Start and go to Explore.
  10. You should see Folders. Find the old user account under Documents and Settings. Choose Documents.
  11. Go to Edit, then Select All and Copy.
  12. In Documents and Settings, expand the new user account folder.
  13. Click New User’s Documents. Choose Edit and then Paste.
  14. Choose Yes to All to confirm the replacement.
  15. Close and log off.

Repair XP

If nothing else works, you can do an XP repair using the Windows Repair disk.

  1. Start the Installation CD.
Choose Repair Existing Installation and let it run. This will replace Windows files and keep installed programs and data intact.
