How to Increase Virtual Memory
What Is Virtual Memory?
Virtual memory picks up where RAM or random access memory drops off. It
assists the computer in having enough resources to perform its work.
How Does Virtual Memory Work?
Virtual memory places data that would normally be kept in RAM onto the
hard drive temporarily. Otherwise, the computer would soon run out of
RAM and the ability to function properly. High performance programs
would no longer run after multiple hours on a computer without the
ability to access virtual memory.
How to Increase Virtual Memory
A few simple steps are all that you need to increase your machine’s
virtual memory. Simply follow these steps one at a time until you
complete your task of increasing virtual memory on your computer:
-
Navigate to Start in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
-
Select the Control Panel.
-
Look for and select Performance and Maintenance.
-
Look for and select System.
-
Look for and Select the Advanced Tab.
-
Select Performance.
-
Select the option for Settings.
-
Look for Virtual Memory and then, select the option for Change.
-
Now you will be looking for a file referred to as the paging file.
To do so, select the hard drive that has your operating system
installed on it. This may or may not be your C drive.
-
Look for the checkbox in front of the words “Custom Size.” Fill it
in so that it is checked off.
-
Two settings should appear. One is labeled “initial” and the other
is labeled “maximum.” In order to increase the performance of your
computer for virtual memory, you need to set both the initial and
the maximum settings to the same number.
If you are not pleased with the performance of your computer, you can
repeat the steps only this time, you need to set the numbers to a higher
amount for both the initial and the maximum settings.
How to Increase Virtual Memory in Vista
A few variations occur in the steps to increase your machine’s virtual
memory when you are using Windows Vista. Follow the steps until you
complete the task of increasing virtual memory on your machine:
-
Navigate to and select Start.
-
Select the Control Panel.
-
Look for and select System and Maintenance.
-
Look for and select System.
-
Look for and Select Advanced System Settings.
-
Look for Performance and select the option for Settings.
-
Select Advanced.
-
Look for Virtual Memory and then, select the option for Change.
-
Select Custom and change the settings for both initial and maximum
to be the same number.
What You Should Select for the Initial and Maximum Amount
A general rule of thumb can be used when changing the numbers in your
initial and maximum settings for virtual memory. Take the value of your
physical RAM and multiply that number by 1.5 in order to calculate the
amount that you should fill in for your initial and maximum settings so
that you get the best results.
