How to Remove Unwanted or Harmful Programs

Tips to manually uninstall unwanted programs

There are a few different methods to try to remove programs from your computer that you don’t want anymore, and there are good reasons to do so. The more data that you keep on your hard drive, the more information there is for different computer processes to sort through to initiate your commands. Even if you don’t need the space for other programs, in the long run the clutter will lead to slower processing time and general sluggish performance.

The first method to get rid of unwanted programs uses uninstaller utilities that are included with the program itself. If programs are built with uninstallers, it is a good idea to use them to make sure that the whole application is properly deleted.

  1. Click Start, then choose Programs
  2. Look through the list for the program that you want to remove
  3. Click to expand the program listings, and look for an uninstaller
  4. If there is an uninstaller, click to select and then follow the onscreen instructions

If there isn’t a built-in uninstaller component, you can try using Windows Add/Remove Programs (renamed to Programs and Features in Vista) to get rid of it. Windows Add/Remove Programs is sufficient for some programs, but doesn’t always work to remove all the components.

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel
  2. Select Add/Remove Programs in XP – or Uninstall Programs in Vista
  3. Look through the list for the program you want to remove, then click Remove/Uninstall

Sometimes the programs that you want to remove might not show up in the Add/Remove list, or parts of the program might remain after you have used the Add/Remove tool. In this case, you can search for and delete unwanted programs manually. This process involves making changes to your computer’s registry and it’s a good idea to set a restore point and create a registry backup before you continue just in case things don’t go as planned.

  1. Use the Search function to open the program directory and delete all the files
  2. Next, delete the directory itself
  3. Open the registry editor
    1. Click Start, then Run
    2. Type regedit in the search bar, then Enter
  4. Find the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the program that you are deleting – then delete the folder
  5. Find the entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the program – then delete the folder

If you have a lot of difficulty removing a program, there are a few tips to check. Sometimes malware programs, viruses and Trojans are programmed to run on the background of your computer, launching themselves automatically and hanging out in places that make them hard to find. The first thing to do in this case is investigate your Startup Programs list. These are the programs that are set to run each time that you turn your computer on. Removing problem programs from this list might make them easier to remove from the computer. You can open the Startup list by following these directions.

  1. Click the Start button, then choose Run
  2. In the search bar, type msconfig and then Enter
  3. Choose Startup and the window will open

Once you have removed any unnecessary programs from the Startup list, you can download the latest updates from your security software provider and run full system scans to get rid of any disturbing applications.

Even after you have removed the program and its files from your computer, random bits of data can remain behind. Windows includes a couple of good utilities to keep your computer clear of redundant data – including disk defragmenter. To run the tool:

  1. Click Start, then Programs
  2. Choose Accessories, then System Tools
  3. Click Disk Defragmenter and follow the instructions to run the tool
