How to Speed-Up Firefox
The place to start if you are running Mozilla Firefox as your web
browser is by updating your software to the latest version. The most
recent release from Mozilla is 3.5.2 – issued August 3rd,
2009 – is the fastest version yet, improving in speed and performance
over earlier versions 2 and 3.
There are a couple of techie tweaks that you might consider making to
your Firefox browser settings to really speed things up. These changes
alter the way that Firefox is programmed to load pages, making it
request more information at a time and access it faster. These hidden
configuration settings tweaks are only applicable for computers with
broadband Internet connections since the default settings are configured
for dial up connections.
-
In the Firefox address bar, type about:config then press
Enter
-
A page of listings will open – type pipelining into the
search bar, press Enter and scroll through and look for the
following entries:
-
network.http.pipelining
-
network.http.proxy.pipelining
-
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
-
Make the following changes by clicking twice on the entry:
-
After the first entry – set to true
-
After the second entry – set to true
-
After the third entry – set a number around 10 – the number of
request to make at any time
-
Now, search for max-connections
-
You’ll see listings for:
-
network.http.max-connections: Change this to 96.
-
network.http.max-connections-per-server: Change this to 32
-
Right click anywhere on the page and choose new->integer
-
Enter the name nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set the value
to 0 – this is the amount of time the browser waits before
initiating information
-
Restart your Firefox browser and check out the speed!

If anything goes wrong when you are making changes on the hidden
configuration panel, there is a remedy that will prevent you needing to
uninstall and reinstall the program, losing your preferences and user
settings. To reset the Firefox settings, first close Firefox, then
follow these directions:
-
Click Start, then Run
-
In the command bar, enter firefox.exe –safe-mode
-
This will open the Firefox Safe Mode Screen – choose Reset All User
Settings to Firefox Defaults
-
Hit Enter, then restart Firefox
Another service pre-set into Firefox isn’t always the most useful when
it comes to loading speed. Firefox is programmed to load the pages that
it anticipates you clicking on, rather than waiting to see what
links you actually choose. The same way that a Google search starts
loading the top hits as soon as they show up, Firefox loads the pages it
expects you to want to see. However, in the event that you don’t want
those pages, the whole procedure can actually slow you down. You can
change this setting by using the same steps as above to open the
about:config page:
-
Find the listing for network.prefetch-next and click on it
twice to change the setting to false.
These tips and tweaks should really improve your Firefox browser speed
and page loading performance.
