How to Fix Windows Start-up Problems

If you get an Error message during Windows start-up

If the error refers to a particular file you may be able to stop the file from running, and cause the computer to boot in a clean error-free state. Open the system configuration utility msconfig.exe and turn off the problematic file.

To start the configuration utility:

Select Start
Select Run
Type misconfig and then OK

To turn off an identified problem file:

Select general tab and then >> selective startup
Clear the system.ini file
Clear the win.ini file
Clear the load startup items
Make sure load system services and boot.ini are selected
Select services and select hide check box
Select disable all and OK
Restart your computer

If Computer stops responding during start-up

Many start-up problems are caused by an incorrect or outdated device driver. Run a driver update utility to ensure all your system drivers are up to date. Proceed to start your computer in safe mode:

To boot your computer in safe mode:

restart your computer and press F8 during boot-up
select safe mode minimal to minimize required resources and increase the probability of booting successfully
Select last known good configuration
run driver update utility
